Knighton Mural by Peter Welton

In October 2012 after the University of Leicester decided to commission Willmott Dixon to reconstruct one of their large buildings for it to be used as an Education Management Centre I was invited to be the Artist/Director charged to produce a mural along the side of Knighton Road behind which the contractors’ activities would be hidden.

I was also asked to involve some of the staff and children of the local Primary School, St. Thomas More Catholic Voluntary Academy. Consequently two teaching assistants, Di and Claire, joined me from the beginning and many children were brought along to see what we were up to and to offer me some good advice! They also put a few spots of paint on under supervision!

This is the largest artwork I have ever painted consisting of 18 panels, each of which is 8 feet by 4 feet. After some discussion we decided the subjects of these painted panels should be people and places in Knighton, an attractive suburb of Leicester. Go and have a look at it, it's hard to miss! After all it is 144 feet long!
